Reconstructing environmental and climate changes using organic compounds (biomarkers) in aquatic ecosystems

Fecha: Jueves 8 de febrero de 2024.
Hora: 9:30h.
Lugar: Salón de Grados de la Facultad de Ciencias.

Ponente: Dr. Sebastian Naeher. Director del Laboratorio de Geoquímica Orgánica del GNS Science (Nueva Zelanda).

Resumen:
This talk will provide a short overview of some of the work we undertake at GNS Science, one of New Zealand’s Crown Research Institutes, which is mainly focused on Earth Science research. The presentation is focused on our work in the field of organic geochemistry and I will provide a general overview of biomarkers (molecular fossils) that we study in lake sediments to understand environmental and climatic changes. I talk about well-established and innovative technologies to study biomarkers, which include gas and liquid chromatography techniques and hyperspectral imaging of sediment cores from lakes and also illustrate opportunities of what we learned about New Zealand’s ecosystems, in particular about vegetation changes, lake productivity and redox condition, temperature and precipitation changes over the last 14,000 years.
