Recently the U.S. National Academy of Sciences completed a comprehensive decadal survey of research opportunities, strategic opportunities, and the state of the profession in astronomy and astrophysics. The survey involved more than 130 members of the survey committee and its 13 sub-panels, and was informed by more than 860 white papers from members of the community. The report, Pathways to Discovery in Astronomy and Astrophysics in the 2020's, highlights those opportunities and presents a strategic plan for future investments in space and ground-based astronomical facilities over the coming decade, as well as foundational investments in supporting research and in the development and broadening of the workforce. This talk will summarize the survey process and the main conclusions and recommendations of the report. Robert Kennicutt served as Co-Chair of the survey.
