Abstract
The lecture first gives a fundamental introduction into the symmetry of crystals and then proceeds to the application of the consequences of symmetry and broken symmetry for physical properties of crystalline materials. Shape memory in alloys is a consequence of a structural phase transition between a state of high symmetry to a state of lower symmetry. The phase change couples with external mechanical stress as it is associated with a pure shear-deformation of the unit cell of the crystal structure.
A live experiment will be shown.
