An overview of our knowledge about magnetic fields in the universe is given, pointing out their significance. Their existence on scales from solar-system objects to clusters of galaxies is manifested by a variety of observations. While our knowledge of this phenomenon has increased substantially over the last decades, we still do not fully understand how cosmic magnetic fields came into existence and how exactly they are sustained.
