Abstract: Microwave sensors are today indispensable tools to infer information about clouds and precipitation both from space and from the ground. In this talk, a short overview will be given about the principles of modern passive and active microwave remote sensing. The wide range of applications will be demonstrated with a focus on ground-based systems including topics such as spatio-temporal water vapor and liquid water variability, drizzle development, and wind profile retrievals.
